Cocoa
Flavonoids are at the centre of cocoa's health benefits. Cocoa powder can be as much as 10% flavonoids. Research has shown that these antioxidants can help protect against damage to the lining of arteries and can also prevent excessive clumping of platelets which can cause unwanted blood clots. Cocoa also may inhibit the absorption of dietary cholesterol.
It is important to note that cocoa does act as a stimulant. Some people may be sensitive to this and so should refrain from over indulging in cocoa. If you find you have trouble sleeping after eating a cocoa rich dessert in the afternoon or before bed it may be due to the stimulating effect. Some people very sensitive to cocoa may notice they become more anxious after eating foods rich with cocoa. These individuals may need to refrain from eating it and alternatively can use Carob powder or carob nibs as a substitute.
